Chemical Engineering - Daniel D Perlmutter


Jack Berger graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City, and entered graduate study at the University of Illinois in September 1961. He became part of the research group of Dr. Daniel D. Perlmutter, pursuing work in the stability and control of chemical reactors.

From the beginning, Jack moved into the Zeta House and remained there throughout his entire stay in Champaign-Urbana. His only roommate during those years was J W Carmichael, Jr.

In his third year of research, Dr. Perlmutter accepted a position at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches to this day. Jack was sufficiently along in his work to complete his doctoral dissertation at Illinois in Novermber 1964.

After graduation, Jack took a position with Exxon in Florham park, NJ. It was during these six years that he met and married the former Carol Kleinberg. In 1971, Jack undertook a fundamental career change, and joined The First National City Bank of New York (later Citibank, N.A. and then Citigroup, Inc.) where he spent the next thirty years. Jack retired from the bank in August, 2000.

The Bergers have six children and six grandchildren.
