LEONARD KAPLAN

Organic Chemistry - Douglas Applequist

From: Carol Tweed

I am the daughter of Leonard Kaplan. I came across your alpha chi sigma webpage today, and wanted to reach out. After his fun with you men at U of I, dad went on to teach at the Univ of Chicago. There, he met my mother and they married and had four children.

Mom and Dad moved to Charleston, WV in the 1970's where he worked for Union Carbide. They separated after about ten years of marriage. He went on to study law at UVA and practiced as a public defender and later worked for the Center for Constitutional Rights. He was always dedicated to civil rights and preservation of individual liberties. Throughout his life he was very active with Amnesty International and brought us to many marches/walks on behalf of civil rights as children.

He lived for perhaps 30 years in Queens - he was happy to move back to NYC as soon as we all left WV for our studies. Unfortunately, he developed dementia and is comfortable but without independence, for the last few years
