Chemical Engineering - Max Peters

Ed Nemeth enrolled in the Chemical Engineering Department at the U of I in September, 1960 after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in the same year. He joined Alpha Chi Sigma and lived in the ΑΧΣ House from September, 1960 until September 1961. He received a MS in ChE from Illinois in February, 1962. At various times, he roomed with Ira Gura, Jerry Tannenbaum, and Sadao Tanimoto.

When Ed left Illinois in 1961, he attended North Carolina State until December, 1962 when he joined DuPont’s Textile Fibers Department in Richmond working on the development of Nomex nylon. He returned to Pitt in September, 1964 and completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering in January, 1967.

Ed joined US Steel Research where his work was concerned with environmental processes, reduction of iron ore, and coal gasification. He then transferred to the Chemicals Division of US Steel in the mid-70s and became Director of Research in 1982. He held this position through the transition of USS Chemicals to Aristech Chemical Corporation and retired from Aristech in 1998.

Ed and Eleanor (a high school math teacher) have been married for 37 years and are parents of a son (also a chemical engineer). Ed and Eleanor continue to live in Mt Lebanon, PA, as they have for over 30 years. They both enjoy traveling. Eleanor is involved with several community groups and Ed volunteers in the Engineering School at Pitt.
