GEORGE F SCHEELE

Chemical Engineering - Thomas J Hanratty

The following was taken from the "The Class of 1957 Princeton Alumni Weekly":

"GEORGE SCHEELE died Feb. 13, 1993, at New England Medical Center, of complications following a second liver transplant. George was diagnosed with liver disease 14 years ago but had no noticeable problems until he broke his leg skating last year. He continued to teach through the fall semester and entered the hospital in January.

"At Princeton, George majored in chemical engineering. He was active in crew and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and joined Prospect Club. In his sophomore year, he roomed with Bruce Rosborough; his senior roommates were Jim Lewis and Dave Taylor.

"He did graduate work at the Univ. of Illinois, achieving an M.S. in ’59 and a Ph.D. in ’62. He then joined the School of Chemical Engineering at Cornell Univ., where he spent his entire career, except for three one-year leaves with Dow Chemical, DuPont, and as visiting professor at U.C. Berkeley.

"George became associate director of Cornell’s School of Chemical Engineering in 1982. His official area of specialty was fluid dynamics relating to jet dynamics and drop coalescence, but his real loves were his students and Cornell. He was honored with the Excellence in Teaching award and was a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. We remember him as an especially warm and friendly human being.

"George was born in Yonkers, N.Y., May 23, 1935, and lived in Ithaca for most of his adult life. He is survived by his widow, Carol; his mother, Madeline; his sister Judith; and two nieces."

When we wrote Cornell University to obtain the photo of George (below), Dr. Paulette Clancy (the William C. Hooey Director and Professor, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) wrote:

"Yes indeed, George Scheele was a much loved member of my faculty. In fact, I overlapped with him for a short time. He was beloved by faculty, staff and students alike. His memory lives on at Cornell through the Scheele lounge in the basement of Olin Hall which is the virtual home for the senior undergraduates as they battle with Unit Operations laboratory and Process Design courses in their final year. We also have a Dow-Scheele award for an outstanding chemical engineering junior. This annual award is selected by a representative from Dow from a short list of top candidates that the School supplies."

Finally, there is a marker in the glen between Barnes Hall and Olin Hall in Memory of Professor George Scheele from his students, 1993. Jack Berger recalls that George was a big guy, and often refered to affectionately as "The Whale".
