JERRY WULLER

Inorganic chemistry - Russell Drago

Jerry Wuller (Ph.D. Inorganic Chemistry 1962) from 1962 to 1969 was a Benedictine monk/chemistry teacher at St. John's Abbey/University, Collegeville MN. I left St. John's in 1969 and spent a sabbatical year at Indiana University, Bloomington IN. Academic and industrial inorganic openings were very scarce in 1970, so I returned to an earlier profession, pharmacist/pharmacy manager for Venture and then Schnucks regional chains until retirement in 2000. I did enjoy teaching (though adjunct faculty status never interested me), but I was an excellent pharmacist and enjoyed professional and personal interactions with customers.

Current volunteer work includes Board Secretary and office help for the nonprofit Interfaith Legal Services For Immigrants, College Church Social Ministry Board, St. Louis University Institutional Research Board. Married (Dr.) Mary Wuller, religious educator, in 1972. Best move of my life. Mary and I enjoy music, plays, cooking, bicycling and state parks. Travel highlight of 2003 was an Elderhostel on Colorado wildlife at Pingree Park, the forestry campus of Colorado State, a beautiful valley at 9000 feet surrounded by ruggedly scenic mountains in which we hiked before, during and after the Elderhostel.

I was on the University of Illinois campus last summer, the chemistry buildings looked the same, but I missed the cafe across the street, the Spudnut shop a block away, and other victims of academic sprawl. One of my nephews is head chemist at a pickle factory; another is a Ph.D. food chemist; others in the family are doing well in scientific careers!

My wife and I are still in good physical shape due to varied exercise (including gym work), healthy (but not bizarre) diet, and volunteer work (which keeps us from sitting too long.)
